Meeting Format:Conference call
Meeting Schedule:Attend the group meeting and the wider circle meeting where possible.
Essential Skills:Proactive, organised and a good communicator
Desired Skills:An understanding of the importance of local democracy and the assemblies process.
Accessibility considerations:If you're hard of hearing (closed captions can be used during meetings) or visually impaired, then the online meeting aspect may be a barrier. You would need to be able to use a computer/keyboard.

The Commmuity Assemblies team is a growing and well-functioning happy team of people who are passionate about promoting assemblies to show how things can be done differently in politics!

Within Extinction Rebellion’s Self-organising System, Community Assemblies is currently a campaign group however we are in the process of changing to a UK working group and the proposal is to become a sub group of Local Grassroots Support [LGS] which sits in Operations.

Community Assemblies Scope:

  • To support Extinction Rebellion Local Groups with planning, organising, publicising, setting up and running Community Assemblies alongside their local allies.
  • To help Local Groups and alliances record and share Assembly recommendations for their councils, MPs, or others with relevant responsibilities.
  • To advise and support local Assemblies until positive engagement is achieved.
  • To help everyone involved in Extinction Rebellion to understand that Community Assemblies are a deliberative democracy pathway to our Third Demand - a Citizens’ Assembly on Climate and Ecological Justice.

The Purpose and Accountabilities are:

  • The team is represented in the broader circle, and aware of that circle’s work and priorities
  • Representing the mandate of the team within meetings of the broader circle, and asking another member of the team to attend when they’re not available
  • Communicating the plan and work of the broader circle to the team
  • Reporting on the health of this team to the broader circle
  • Taking issues that can’t be resolved in the team to the broader circle
  • Exchanging information with other teams (not their own sub-circles) where this is not already being done by link roles

We support Local XR Groups in holding Community Assemblies and achieving their inclusion in local decision-making. In doing this, to have: - built enduring local alliances for climate and ecological justice. - built agency, purpose and trust within local communities through Community Assembly engagement. - demonstrated to local communities that this deliberative democratic process works and can be carried through nationally and completely in the Citizens’ Assembly for Climate and Ecological Justice.
